painting is like light copy editing

Tier 1: Light Copyediting

Also sometimes described as proofreading, this is like the final inspection before the book goes to print. This option is good for final drafts, and it covers all the superficial errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If you want your manuscript prepared all the way through to the final file that is sent to the press, this tier can also cover typesetting, which looks for awkward line breaks or word breaks, incorrect pagination, and inconsistencies in the layout.

Depending on the length of the work and the content, this price usually ranges from $0.01 to $0.03 per word.

Tier 2: Moderate Copyediting

Tier two can also be described as line editing.

This is good for second or third drafts, covering the essentals (spelling, grammar, punctuation) as well as edits for continuity errors, lack of clarity, and overall flow. You can expect notes about things like:

  • Unclear or repetitive word usage

  • Realisticness or inconsistency in dialogue

  • Shifts in point of view

  • Shifts in tense

  • Inconsistencies in descriptions, blocking, characters, etc

Depending on the length of the work and the content, this price usually ranges from $0.02 to $0.05

per word.

Tier 3: Detailed Developmental Editing

If you have an early draft that needs a heavy critique and big-picture analysis, tier three gives you the substantial edit you're looking for. It is a detailed edit and full story breakdown that includes section reorganizing, character (re)building, plot and narrative assay, line edits, and suggested rewrites. It approaches your work with the same lens as an editorial assessment but offers more substantial and personalized feedback.

Depending on the length of the work and the content, this price usually ranges from $0.03 to $0.06 per word.

Tier 4: Editing + Localization

This package offers editing that can range between tier two and three, depending on your needs, alongside localization critique. This is often best for translated works, but can also be beneficial for works grounded in a setting that might be significantly different than the author's culture(s).

Localization will focus on things like idiomatic expressions that don't translate well; geography, flora, and fauna that might be unfamiliar; and emotional expressions or societal dynamics that may not make sense to certain audiences.

Depending on the length of the work and the content, this price usually ranges from $0.04 to $0.07 per word.
